Standardization of Godavari River Flood Banks, Andhra Pradesh

Engineering Services

Godavari River is a major waterway in central India. The upper waters of the Godavari are scarcely utilized for irrigation, but the entire delta has been turned into a garden of perennial crops by means of the anicut at Dowalaiswaram, constructed by Sir Arthur Cotton 145 years ago.

The river enters the Andhra Pradesh near Bhadrachalam and flows touching the towns such as Godhavarikhani, Rajahmundry, Kovvur, Tallapudi and Narsapur in a southeast direction until it empties into the Bay of Bengal through two mouths. Whenever the discharge in river Godavari exceeds 28,320 Cumecs the water level in the river raises above the adjoining lands in the delta, affecting crop in 4.0 lakh hectares of rich cultivable land as also affecting the livelihood of 3.5 million people. Based on the experience of past floods, it was proposed to raise the flood banks by 2.00 m over the observed maximum flood level (OMFL) of 1986 flood and widen the banks to the standards for the length of 405.50 Kms.

Erstwhile APGENCO has taken up construction of weir across river Krishna about 14kms downstream of the existing Srisailam dam for storing the released water during the power generation mode. With the completion of tail pond, surplus electricity from the electricity grid would be used for pumping the water back to Srisailam reservoir and recycled for meeting peaking load on daily basis. During this time, the scheme works in pumping mode or special pump mode. The generators are designed to operate as an electric motor which rotates the turbines in reverse, and pumps water back into upper reservoir.

Thus surplus electricity is utilised to fill the reservoir, which can be used to meet the peak electricity requirements. ConTec was appointed as consultant for design and drawings in respect of right side abutment for protection of Srisailam Tailpond weir by Andhra Pradesh Power Generation Corporation (APGENCO).

Run-of-the-river Hydro Electric Project of proposed capacity 320 MW (8 x 40 MW) across River Godavari at Dummugudem, Khammam District, Telangana State

The Detailed Project Report (DPR) is prepared for developing a 320 Mw run -of-river hydroelectric power project by constructing a gravity dam across River Godavari at Dummugudem village, Khammam district in Andhra Pradesh for APGENCO. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) is prepared by ConTec in line with the Guidelines laid down by Central Electricity Authority (CEA) for formulation of Detailed Project Report (DPR)s for Hydro Electric Schemes, in compliance with the requirement of Section 8 of the Electricity Act, 2003.

The 2500 Cr. project envisages construction of a gated spillway in the deepest course of River Godavari, sandwiched between concrete overflow sections (auxiliary spillways), with a bridge proposed to connect with the earth and rock fill dam on both sides to pass a design discharge of about 1,00,000 cumecs. The power house is located within the concrete non overflow section on the right bank immediately after the right concrete overflow section. The work is done for Andhra Pradesh Power Generation Corporation (APGENCO).
